There are 1.3 billion Catholics in the world. How many of them are here in San Antonio, Texas? According to the Archdiocese of San Antonio, there were 796,954 Catholics in San Antonio in 2017. That means over 32% of the city is Catholic! The numbers could be even higher since these statistics were from two years ago!

What Religions Observe Lent?

Although Catholics are most commonly associated with Lent, there are a few other religions who also celebrate Lent! It is observed in the Anglican, Eastern Orthodox, Oriental Orthodox, Lutheran, and Methodist churches.

What is Lent?

Lent is a religious season that takes place over 40 consecutive days. These days represent the time Jesus spent in the wilderness, enduring the temptation of Satan and preparing to start his ministry. Lent starts on Ash Wednesday and ends on Easter Sunday.

Lent is a time to repent, fast, and prepare for Easter. Many people will give up something they enjoy or take on something new as a means of self-examination and reflection during this time. Some examples would be giving up social media, gossip, caffeine, or desserts. Others may choose to add something rather than take away something. Some examples would be to say a daily rosary, volunteer a few times a week, or give one person a compliment a day.

During the 40 days, the goal is to grow closer with God through sacrifice and prayer.

What is Ash Wednesday?

If someone has ever told you, “You have dirt on your forehead,” you are probably Catholic. If you see people walking around with black ashes in the shape of a cross on their forehead, chances are that it’s Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent. The ashes come from the burning of palm branches from the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebrations. When they draw the sign of the cross with the ashes, they may repeat the words “Repent and believe in the Gospel” from Mark 1:15 or “Remember that you are dust, and to dust you shall return” from Genesis 3:19.

Can I have a BBQ during Lent?

You can most definitely enjoy BBQ during Lent – with the exception of Fridays and Ash Wednesday, of course! Another part of Lent is fasting and refraining from meat. Christians are told to refrain from eating meat on Ash Wednesday and every Friday throughout Lent. In addition, they must only have one large meal and 2 small snacks throughout the day as part of the sacrifice.
