San Antonio, Texas is not just home to some of the best BBQ in the nation – it is also known as Military City, USA! May is recognized as Military Appreciation Month, but here at Bar-B-Cutie, we recognize and thank our military every single day. Read on to learn more about this special time of year:

What is Military Appreciation Month?

In 1999, Congress declared the month of May as Military Appreciation Month. Since then, every May we recognize, honor, and remember the brave American soldiers who risk their lives for our freedoms every day. The United States Armed Forces have played – and continue to play – a huge role in the history and development of our great nation.

You may wonder why May was the month they chose to dedicate to the military. May holds a few other special dates for military recognition, including Military Spouse Appreciation Day, Armed Forces Day, and Memorial Day. May also holds some of our military’s greatest achievements from Victory in Europe Day, which commemorates the end of WWII in Europe in 1945, to the anniversary of the death of Osama bin Laden.

Loyalty Day

Wednesday, May 1st

This is one holiday you probably aren’t very familiar with, but Loyalty Day kicks off our Nation’s month-long celebration of military appreciation. On this day, we are urged to reaffirm our loyalty to the United States and reflect on the proud heritage of our American freedom.

Public Service Recognition Week

Sunday, May 5th – Saturday, May 11th

During the first full week of May, we celebrate PSRW. This week is dedicated to honoring the men and women who serve our nation as federal, state, county, and local government employees. Through their dedication and hard work, we can ensure that our government is the best in the world.

Victory in Europe Day

Wednesday, May 8th

Most civilians wouldn’t recognize this day if you brought it up, but many military members would. Also known as V-E Day or VE Day, this is the day when Germans throughout Europe unconditionally surrendered to the Allies. On May 8th, 1945, World War II came to an end in Europe.

Military Spouse Appreciation Day

Friday, May 10th

This day has typically been scheduled to fall on the Friday before Mother’s Day. Military spouses play an important role in military families and help keep our Armed Forces strong and safe. This day is usually recognized with various ceremonies and activities.

Armed Forces Day

Saturday, May 18th

Every year, on the third Saturday in May, citizens will gather together to thank our military members for their patriotic service.  This day honors those who serve in each of the U.S. Military branches; Air Force, Army, Coast Guard, Marines, and Navy.

Memorial Day

Monday, May 27th

We celebrate this day every last Monday in May to remember and honor our fallen heroes who served.
